November 2009 - Our Dessert Wine Good as GOLD
Ngatarawa continues its acclaim as a leading dessert wine producer. New Zealand's pre-eminent wine show, the Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2009, awarded a GOLD MEDAL to Glazebrook Noble Harvest Riesling 2009.
First released under the Glazebrook brand in 1994, it quickly set a benchmark for future vintages. Winestate magazine in its 1996 July/August issue, rated the 1994 vintage 5 Stars with the following review “This is a glorious wine … classic sweet Riesling, oily and opulent.”
The 1998 Cuisine Annual rated the 1996 vintage Classic Wine status with 5 Stars and the review “… ravishingly beautiful Hawke’s Bay sticky made from estate grown Riesling.”
Michael Cooper awarded the 2000 vintage ‘Classic’ status in his Buyers Guide to New Zealand Wine. He further wrote in the Sunday Star Times in May 2002, “ … a weighty, oily, treacly Hawke’s Bay beauty.” Subsequent vintages in 2002, 2005 and 2006 continued this ‘classic’ benchmark.
The Glazebrook Regional Reserve range explores the potential of the very best grape varieties grown in the top wine regions across New Zealand. The Bridge Pa Triangle, south-west of Hastings in Hawke’s Bay, consistently produces expressive and outstanding Noble Harvest Riesling on the Ngatarawa home vineyard.
Winemaker Alwyn Corban, is passionate about dessert wine and in particular Noble Harvest Riesling. At Ngatarawa the Riesling grapes need exact weather conditions in the vineyard to present evenly raisined bunches for harvesting - entirely in the lap of the gods. In the winery the sweet viscous grape juice presents another challenge - entirely in the lap of the winemaker. Every step of the way the wine is coaxed and nurtured to reveal its beauty and lusciousness.
