July 2007 - RARE TRILOGY Alwyn New Releases
Ngatarawa has just released the three pillars of the Alwyn Winemakers Reserve Range - a first to be altogether.
Alwyn Chardonnay 2006
Alwyn Merlot Cabernet 2005
Alwyn Noble Harvest Riesling 2006
The Alwyn brand is the epitome of winemaking at Ngatarawa. Named after the winery's founding winemaker, Alwyn Corban, these wines are only released in exceptional vintages and even then only in small quantities. They are the winemaker's expression of his craft, his aspiration for quality and style.
The wines are Alwyn Corban's story, his passion, heritage and life. Each bottle bears his name, signature and thumbprint.
They are an expression of the vineyards where they are grown. The vineyards, which have been identified for more than 10 years now, are managed every season to produce this quality of wine, even though the wine will not be released if it doesn't pass the stringent Alwyn criteria.
The 2006 Chardonnay is 100% from Bridge Pa Triangle vineyards, the 2006 Noble Harvest is 100% from Bridge Pa Triangle vineyards and the 2005 Merlot Cabernet is 47.5% Bridge Pa Triangle and 52.5% Gimblett Gravels vineyards.
Alwyn Chardonnay
Vintages produced: 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005 and 2006
Of the Alwyn range the Alwyn Chardonnay has been released more often than the other two wines. It is a "New Zealand classic" and ranks alongside the best produced in New Zealand.
Alwyn Merlot Cabernet
Vintages produced: 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005
The Alwyn Merlot Cabernet has been released only occassionally since 1998, in part because of the influence of the season on wine quality, but also because of our search as winemakers for the style of wine we aspire to make.
With the 2005 vintage we have focused on fruit ripeness and flavour, body and texture on the palate, and oak influence (from maturation in French barriques) as supporting rather than dominanting the fruit.
Alwyn Noble Harvest Riesling
Vintages produced: 1994, 2000, 2002, 2006
Ngatarawa has grown to become a widely respected producer of dessert wines. Initially a winemaker’s passion these wines have become a tradition and specialty at Ngatarawa.
Our first dessert wine was released in 1987. It was "Riesling Botrytised Berry Selection" which in subsequent years was labeled as "Penny Noble Harvest" and eventually "Glazebrook Noble Harvest Riesling".
Glazebrook Noble Harvest Riesling is a "New Zealand Classic" described by Michael Cooper, in his book, Classic Wines of New Zealand, as "gloriously perfumed and nectareous beauty, one of New Zealand's most exceptional 'stickies'."
Alwyn Noble Harvest Riesling is a "bigger brother of the Glazebrook Noble Harvest Riesling. The harvest criteria are more stringent (only bunches that have more than 80% of their berries raisined by botrytis are harvested which will usually give a pressed juice of >40 Brix) and the juice is barrel fermented (which gives an extra layer of complexity to the wine).
